iTunes 7: The Good, the Bad and the Not-So-Pretty

Apple had a big announcement on Tuesday which included a new version of iTunes which included their movie store and a couple of other things. Mostly I am going to concentrate on iTunes, since it has a more significant effect on my daily life than the rest of the announcements.

The movie thing is cool, but it won't affect me in any way, shape or form. I'm not going to buy DVD's online.

The Good

Neat little features here and there. They finally allow you to add CDText to burned audio CD's. Very nice. It's been lacking for a while. They incorporated the iPod software update into iTunes itself, rather than having a separate application, which is nice. One less application to separately install. Automatically downloading album art is _awesome_. Lots of props on that.

The Bad

I fell for it again. I fell for Apple's marketing voodoo. They laid claim that my iPod would sync back up with "multiple computers", basically anything that I have my iTunes account authorized on. I was exstatic. This way my iPod would auto-sync all my music from my computer at home to my computer at work.

Yeah, well it only auto-syncs things I've purchased from the iTunes Music Store. They provide a tutorial on how to accomplish this task, so why not just automagically include this in the iPod -> computer sync process??

Bad form.

The Not-So-Pretty

The UI redesign. It's alright, I like what they've done with the iPod page, but I'm not horribly keen on the folder/treeview thingie on the left.

Summary

Overall, definite improvments in functionality and use. Just wish it would be able to sync my entire iPod and I wouldn't have to go through a completely separate process.
