Comments diabled again

I need to install the capcha module on my blog, and until I do so, I am going to disable comments, as I loathe getting spammed with emails about comments and then have to go clean them up.

Arg.

Comments

I've been getting a ton of spam comments as of late, so in an effort to at least curb my own email account annoyances, I've disabled comments for now. I'll come up with a better solution soon.

I realize that you can't comment on this post, so if you have any questions, concerns, comments, criticisms or critiques please direct them to my email address, which is firstname.lastname@gmail.com[0]

I do have more extended posts coming, I've been slacking.

[0] It's not _actually_ that, but replace those with my first name and last name and you should be set.

Another possible title

It occured to me today that another good possible title to my blog would be "A Cautionary Tale". This thought brought to you today by my stupid display of diving into the water without being able to see the bottom. I quickly learned that the bottom was not very far and ended up cutting my hand and foot on the rocks/shells on the bottom.

Yeah...I'm dumb.

New version of MT + comment goodness

Well, another reason I haven't posted in a while (other than not knowing how to tell everyone that I got sh**canned) is because I wanted to update my blog to MySQL from a flat file database[0] so that I could install MT-close. Installing that should help prevent a lot of comment spam on my blog.

[0] If you could call a flat file a database.

Talked out of it

Dave talked me out of getting rid of MT. According to him, his "flurry" of spam comments equaled some number less than 10, so I don't think I'll have a problem with that.

The key to the whole process is something called MT-close which closes posts to comments that are older than 'x' days. So, basically I have to cut off for comments certain age posts. I have decided that anything that is off the first page (2 weeks old) will be closed for comments. I don't think I have ever gotten a legitimate comment on something that was several months old, so I think this is pretty fair.

Unfortunately, I have to do a little rework to get this to work. MT-close requires that you are using MySQL and I am currently using the BerkeyDB to do my back-end stuff. So I need to take down the blog and do some maintainence to make the change-over. I want to do it this week and I'll probably do it at night (my time), so I doubt anyone will be affected, but just as a heads up.

The end of MT???

Well, I just cleared about 1000 spam comments from my blog. So annoying. I am getting highly annoyed about this. I really do have to install MT-close like dave has, although he had a recent flurry of spam posts on his blog as well.

I wonder if there is a better system out there than MT. A quick search on Google provided me with the following link. It looks similar to the software that Dave uses for the forum. I may go there eventually, but for now I want to at least give MT another week or so with MT-close installed and see how much spam I get. Then I may go to the other system and see how it works.

Stupid spammers. Quick annoying me!!!!

(edit: put the /blog/ in the link to dave...as a side note, there have been 4 spam comments in the last 5 minutes...sigh)

Changes on the blog

As you may or may not have noticed, I not only changed the name of the blog, but the description as well. We'll see how it works and then go from there. I thought about changing the name to "I'm not claiming to be role-model quality" because of a lyric from a Lucky Boys Confusion song, but Dave informed me that it was a quote from Charles Barkley as well, so I decided against that. I settled for the name of the Dread Pirate Roberts ship, going with the whole hostname motif.

IP Banning

The whole IP Banning thing on my blog really seemed to cut down on the amount of spam that I get. I still get a couple a day, but that's pretty much it. Nobody[0] has told me that it has prevented them from commenting on my blog, so it appears to be a successful experiment (for now).

[0] Nobody that I care about getting comments from (read: non-spammers)

MT-Blacklist

MT-Blacklist has to be one of the most wonderful things in the world. Unfortunately, it's to the point where I have to run it so damn often it's annoying. Does anyone know if i can automatically be run when a comment is posted?

(edit)

Well, there's a way to ban specific IP addresses from posting comments on my blog. So, I am going to try that in the meantime. If this causes any people problems with commenting on my blog, I will remove the feature. If this happens to you, email me at hawrylmj at cs dot rose hyphen hulman dot edu and I will take care of it.

<---- Lookie!!!

I decided to put an "About Me" section like Froyd. Just in case you didn't notice I thought I'd draw attention to it. That is all.
